How ChatGPT Memory Works—and How to Edit What It Remembers
ChatGPT memory is now a standard feature of AI chatbots. These tools can store information from your interactions, allowing them to reference previous conversations and use that context when composing answers. For example, if you tell ChatGPT that you’re vegetarian, it should avoid recommending recipes that contain meat.
Persistent memory raises privacy concerns as more people use AI apps to share details about their lives. It can also influence the answers you receive in ways you may not expect.
You might spend a week researching how to replace a light switch, causing ChatGPT to assume you’re a DIY enthusiast. Or you could search for places near a vacation destination, leading the AI to think you live there. Because chatbot answers can now incorporate remembered context, it’s important to understand how ChatGPT memory works and how to manage it.
How ChatGPT Memory Works
When ChatGPT introduced its memory feature in April 2024, users had to explicitly tell the chatbot to “remember this” if they wanted it to retain specific information. Without that request, the information would be forgotten as the conversation progressed, although users could bring it up again later.
That initial system was limited. Memories could remain fixed even after circumstances changed. For example, if you mentioned an upcoming party, ChatGPT might continue treating the event as being in the future—even after the date had passed—until you told it otherwise.
After the June update, ChatGPT began using a feature called “Dreaming,” as described in an OpenAI blog post. Memories can now change and be edited over time, allowing ChatGPT to recognize that a past event is no longer upcoming. Memory is also saved and curated automatically, so users no longer need to make every request manually.
In practice, the chatbot—not the user—decides what information is important enough to remember. That can make ChatGPT more convenient, but it also creates potential problems. The AI continually refines what it thinks it knows about you, and its assessment may not always be accurate.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT memory has three main purposes: carrying useful context into future conversations, following user preferences and constraints, and keeping information current over time. Ideally, this makes responses more personalized and helpful, but users may have less control over the process than they expect.
