Nature Index data reveal the leading countries, institutions and international partnerships shaping regenerative medicine research from 2016 to 2025. The United States remains ahead, but China’s rapid growth—particularly in the health sciences—could narrow the gap in the coming years.
United States and China lead regenerative medicine research
The chart shows the 10 countries with the highest regenerative medicine production value in the Nature Index between 2016 and 2025, measured by share. The gap between the United States and China could narrow if China’s strong expansion across the Nature Index, especially in health sciences, continues.

Which institutions prioritize regenerative medicine?
Among the 50 leading regenerative medicine institutions in the Nature Index from 2016 to 2025, these 10 institutions had the highest proportion of their total research output connected to the field. At the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, for example, just over 10% of the institution’s total Nature Index journal output was related to regenerative medicine.

International collaboration in regenerative medicine
These country pairs ranked highest for regenerative medicine collaboration based on their total bilateral cooperation score from 2016 to 2025. Each pair reflects strong contributions from both countries. However, the United States has more than 10 times the regenerative medicine share of several countries represented on this list.
