Best Overall Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 12
Apple Watch Series 12
Price: $399 at Apple, Amazon, and Best Buy
Series 12 is Apple’s flagship smartwatch and the best overall choice for most people. Its biggest upgrade is a new health-sensing system designed to expand the scope, accuracy, and frequency of health tracking.
The ECG now uses 32 electrodes, up from two on the Series 11, to improve skin contact. Updated optical sensing and more efficient LEDs also deliver more accurate heart-rate readings. Series 12 records heart rate every five seconds and heart-rate variability (HRV) every five minutes throughout the day. By comparison, Series 11 recorded heart rate every five minutes and HRV approximately every two hours.
Series 12 also introduces Apple’s Readiness Score, which provides a snapshot of how prepared your body is for the day based on recent health and activity data. Audio Intelligence is another major addition, although two marquee features—Live Rewind and Siri Recap—will not arrive until later this year.
Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, but charging is faster. A 15-minute charge can provide up to 12 hours of sleep tracking with regular use, while a five-minute charge can provide up to 10 hours of sleep tracking.
The main feature Series 12 lacks compared with Series 11 is satellite connectivity. Otherwise, it offers the features most people need, particularly if they do not plan to go off-grid.
Best Apple Watch for Battery Life: Apple Watch Ultra 4
Apple Watch Ultra 4
Price: $780 at Amazon; $799 at Apple and Best Buy
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the better choice if you prioritize battery life, faster charging, and additional health-tracking features.
It lasts up to 50 hours on a single charge, compared with 42 hours for the Ultra 3, and up to 84 hours in low-power mode. Enhanced fast charging provides up to 18 hours of normal use after 15 minutes of charging and up to 10 hours of sleep tracking after five minutes.
A new health-sensing system and the faster S11 chip enable more frequent background heart-rate and HRV tracking. The Ultra 4 also supports Readiness scores and Apple’s suite of Audio Intelligence features.
