Elon Musk’s America PAC Targets Key Senate Races in 2026 Midterm Elections
Elon Musk political spending is increasingly focused on the most consequential races in the midterm elections, according to a WIRED analysis of federal campaign finance data.
America PAC has spent $21 million on seven Senate races
As of October 6, Musk’s main super PAC, America PAC, had directed $21 million of the $26.7 million it spent on campaigns this year toward seven key Senate races viewed as close or potentially competitive. The races could help determine whether Democrats take control of the chamber in November.
WIRED created a live tracker to monitor US PAC spending during the midterm elections. Updated daily, the tracker shows where PACs are directing money—from individual campaigns to Musk’s broader impact on the election season. This report is based on America PAC filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), which list payments for ads, mailers, and text messages.
America PAC is spending less than it did in 2024
America PAC is smaller and has a different purpose than it did two years ago. The organization registered with the FEC in May 2024 and spent $261 million during that election cycle, with about 95 percent of its funding coming from Musk.
The $26.7 million America PAC has spent so far this year is about one-third of the $85.9 million it had spent by the same point in 2024. More than 90 percent of its 2024 spending went toward presidential races, while relatively little was directed to Senate contests.
Most PAC spending targets Democratic candidates
A WIRED review found that most US PAC spending this election cycle has focused on campaign efforts attacking Democrats. As of October 6, PACs had spent more than $2 opposing Democratic candidates for every $1 spent supporting Republican candidates. In Senate races, the ratio was $3 to $1.
Why the Senate races matter to Musk
The political stakes are especially high for Republicans this November. Democrats could win the Senate majority if they flip four battleground races while holding their current three Senate seats.
Democratic control of the Senate could also have significant implications for Musk. He could become the subject of a congressional investigation, while his companies could face legislation involving technology and artificial intelligence regulation.
According to the filing, the ratio of negative to positive campaign messages was even more skewed in the most volatile Senate race, where Republicans trailed.
