Google is expanding its Registered App Store Program as it adapts its Android app ecosystem after losing the Epic Games antitrust case. Stores that meet Google’s requirements can apply for registration at no cost, with support for the program expected to reach some Android devices later this year.
Registered stores will get Android platform privileges
App stores accepted into the program will receive preferential treatment on Android. Users will be able to install apps from approved stores with one tap, providing an experience similar to installing apps through Google Play. Registered stores will also be able to update apps silently in the background, another feature associated with Google’s store.
“In March, we announced the Registered App Store Program, which provides a more streamlined way for third-party app stores to reach users while keeping the Android ecosystem safe and secure,” a Google spokesperson said. “Eligible app stores outside the U.S. can now apply for store registration ahead of a new simplified installation experience rolling out to users later this year.”
Program follows Epic antitrust ruling
Google originally developed the Android Registered App Store Program as a backup plan after losing an appeal of Judge James Donato’s ruling in the Epic Games antitrust case. The ruling subjected Google to several potential remedies, including allowing third-party app stores and sharing its app catalog with rival stores. The most significant requirement was that Google distribute third-party stores through Google Play.
After the trial, Google and Epic attempted to reach a settlement that would give Google more control over how the changes were implemented. Registered App Stores were proposed as an alternative to hosting a store directly on Google Play, provided that participating stores met baseline reliability and security requirements.
Google intended to use the program both in the United States and internationally. However, the companies withdrew from the settlement after the court indicated that it would not approve the agreement. Under the current arrangement, users in the United States can access Google Play under the court’s order, while users in other markets will be able to use a registered app store of their choice.
