Microsoft has begun rolling out preview updates for Windows 11 that address a long-standing complaint from power users: the redesigned right-click menu. Update KB5127936 adds controls for customizing context-menu commands and introduces Cloud Rebuild, a recovery option that can reinstall Windows 11 from the cloud. The rollout comes as Microsoft’s quarterly financial report shows continued declines in its Windows license sales business for new PCs.
Windows 11 right-click menus become customizable
The preview update, KB5127936, is a cumulative update for Windows 11 versions 26H2 and 25H2. Microsoft is distributing it in stages, with a regular rollout to all compatible Windows 11 devices planned once the update becomes generally available.
The update adds a Customize Menu button that lets users control the commands displayed when they right-click. Users can turn built-in commands such as Send to and Create shortcut on or off, rearrange commands on the main menu, and choose which third-party extensions appear on the main menu or in submenus.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 context-menu redesign frustrated users by hiding familiar commands behind icons in the top row and moving other options into the Show more options submenu. The new controls are intended to let users restore a layout that better matches their established habits, potentially reducing the need for custom scripts and third-party services.
Cloud Rebuild offers a cloud-based Windows recovery option
The preview also introduces Cloud Rebuild, a recovery feature that can reinstall Windows 11 directly from the cloud, including when an existing Windows 11 installation fails to start. It retrieves Windows 11 images and the required system drivers through Windows Update, so users do not need a custom recovery image or external installation media.
Despite being categorized as a recovery option, Cloud Rebuild does not preserve existing applications or files. It therefore works more like a fresh Windows installation than a repair. Users concerned about data security can sanitize the entire system drive before reinstalling Windows.
