AI-powered web search can be highly useful for common queries with abundant, current online information, such as finding restaurants in San Francisco. But results become less dependable for obscure destinations or highly specific requests, such as finding a star-shaped dining table. Because AI systems must connect information from multiple sources, users should verify important answers rather than accepting them without checking.
AI chatbots can improve on traditional Google Search by interpreting natural-language queries and presenting synthesized answers. Their convenience is greatest when the web contains plenty of reliable information, while less common or more precise searches require greater caution.
When not to use AI for web searches
Generative AI bots and large language models (LLMs) are particularly effective at paraphrasing, synthesizing and summarizing information. However, errors can occur during each of those steps. For precise details—including celebrity quotes, report statistics and device specifications—traditional Google Search may be the better option.
Traditional search is also preferable when you want complete control over the sources you consult. Delegating a web search to AI means relying on the system to interpret your query correctly, locate appropriate sources and extract accurate information from them. That can save time, but the process is less transparent.
AI search provides answers, but are you using trusted sources?
