Apple has acknowledged that a small number of its newly released iPhone Duo foldable devices are experiencing internal screen problems. Images shared on social media appear to show lines and cracks developing along the display’s central crease, while some owners have reported a crunching sound when opening the phone. The iPhone Duo starts at £1,999 ($2,668) in the UK.
Apple offers replacements for affected phones
Apple said it was aware of “an issue affecting the internal display of a small number of phones” and urged customers experiencing the problem to contact the company for a replacement.
The reports emerged just days after the device went on sale. The iPhone Duo’s launch attracted crowds at Apple stores around the world last week, as the company seeks to reinvigorate its device lineup and compete with foldable phones from rival manufacturers.
Some owners posted photographs showing a crack running along the screen’s central crease. Others said their devices made a crunching noise when opened.
iPhone Duo user Justin Rokos shared an image of his phone with a line on the right side of the display. He later posted a photograph of his replacement alongside the damaged device and thanked the Apple Store in New York for its assistance.
Extent of the screen problem remains unclear
Apple has not said how many devices are affected, making it difficult to determine the scale of the problem. Some images of allegedly defective phones may also have been generated using artificial intelligence.
Francisco Geronimo, a technology analyst at market research firm IDC, said this meant caution was needed before drawing conclusions about the iPhone Duo’s overall production.
However, he said the early reports demonstrated that “even a company with Apple’s engineering resources and supply chain discipline faces a steep learning curve when it comes to foldable devices.”
