Purge is a Mac utility that shows what is using storage and provides tools for removing caches, large files, unused applications, leftover app data and Apple Intelligence models. Its features can help free space, although users should review items carefully before deleting them.
Find and remove unnecessary Mac files
To get started, download Purge and install it. When you open the app, it displays the content taking up space on your Mac.
Purge identifies items it considers clean and safe to remove. However, it is still best to review the results before proceeding. The app first presents a list of caches, which can generally be deleted regularly.
Apple’s Aerial screen saver videos also appear in the list. Although the videos are attractive, they can consume considerable storage. If you do not use the screen saver, removing its files can recover that space.
Clear developer files and locate large items
Purge includes a section for developer tools that may not be useful to most people. Homebrew users, however, should check it because it provides a straightforward way to remove cached installation files that are no longer needed.
Another tool displays the largest files on the computer, which are likely to include videos and other large media files. Reviewing this list can reveal files that have been forgotten and may be suitable for moving elsewhere or deleting.
Uninstall apps and remove leftover data
Purge’s application uninstaller removes more than the app itself. It also deletes associated files, including settings, caches and content downloaded by the application. By comparison, deleting an app through the Finder may leave these files behind.
The app also includes a tool for viewing residual data from applications that have already been deleted. In some cases, this leftover data can occupy several gigabytes. Review the list and remove large items only when you are certain they are no longer needed.
Remove Apple Intelligence models
Purge offers one more option for users who do not use Apple Intelligence. Apple’s latest operating system includes offline AI models that support features such as notification summaries, suggestions and the new AI-powered Siri.
Users may rely on these features, but Apple removed a toggle in macOS 27 that previously allowed them to disable Apple Intelligence completely. Purge therefore provides a tool for removing the models from the Mac.
Opening the tool displays the installed models above a removal button. After the button is selected, Purge removes the models and prevents macOS from reinstalling them.
These tools make Purge useful for identifying what is consuming storage and deciding which files can be removed to recover space on a Mac.
