What Happens During a Total Solar Eclipse
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, completely blocking the Sun’s bright disk and casting a narrow path of darkness across Earth’s surface.
As the Sun’s brilliant surface disappears, its faint, wispy outer atmosphere—known as the corona—becomes visible. Stars and planets may appear in the darkened sky, temperatures can drop, and winds may change. Birds, insects and other animals may also behave as though nighttime has arrived.
On August 12, 2026, the solar eclipse will be visible across much of Europe. The narrow path of totality, where the Moon completely covers the Sun, will cross Greenland, Iceland, a small area of northeastern Portugal and Spain.
People outside the path of totality will see a partial solar eclipse. From these locations, the Moon will appear to take a “bite” out of the Sun, causing daylight to dim slightly.
ESA Will Broadcast the August 2026 Eclipse Live From Spain
ESA will mark the 2026 total solar eclipse with a live broadcast from the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre in Teruel, Spain. The country is expected to offer favorable viewing conditions as the eclipse travels across Spain from west to east.
Viewers can watch the ESA eclipse broadcast on ESA Web TV or the agency’s YouTube channel beginning at 1:30 p.m. EDT (19:30 CEST) on August 12, 2026.
Award-winning space scientist and science communicator Dame Dr. Maggie Aderin will host the program. Guests will include ESA Director of Science Professor Carole Mundell, ESA scientists Andy To, Miho Janvier and Martin Hewitson, and observatory director Javier Cenarro.
Live interviews, expert explanations and detailed eclipse imagery will explore the science behind the event. The broadcast will cover the Sun and its corona, the historic eclipse that helped confirm Einstein’s theory of gravity, and ESA’s efforts to create artificial solar eclipses in space.
81 Seconds of Total Darkness
The most dramatic part of the broadcast will take place at 2:31 p.m. EDT (11:31 a.m. PDT), when Javalambre reaches totality. For 1 minute and 21 seconds, the Moon will completely cover the Sun, plunging the observatory into darkness.
ESA’s coverage will feature telescope views and drone footage of the total solar eclipse, as well as reactions from Maggie Aderin and Carole Mundell as they experience totality.
The live eclipse broadcast will be presented in English and is expected to end at approximately 2:45 p.m. EDT (11:45 a.m. PDT).
Why Javalambre Is an Ideal Eclipse Viewing Site
The Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre is a world-class astronomical facility located directly within the path of totality. Its two primary professional telescopes conduct wide-field surveys that help scientists study galaxies, dark energy and the large-scale structure of the universe.
The observatory is also an excellent location for viewing the August 2026 total solar eclipse. Cloud cover is uncommon, light pollution is minimal, and the site offers a clear view toward the western horizon. This will be especially important because the Sun will be approaching sunset as the Moon moves across it.
Several additional small telescopes will be installed at the observatory specifically for the eclipse. Their live video feeds will provide continuous close-up views of the Moon as it gradually passes across the Sun, capturing each stage of the solar eclipse.
During the ESA broadcast, observatory director Javier Cenarro will explain the importance of Javalambre and discuss its role in a future ESA space science mission.
Multiple Live Feeds Will Track the Total Solar Eclipse
ESA will use more than one observing site to cover the August 12, 2026, total solar eclipse. Two additional live feeds will come from locations within the path of totality, increasing the chances of delivering clear, high-quality views throughout the event.
One feed will come from ESA’s public eclipse event in León. Another will originate in Frómista, Palencia, where collaborator Alejandro Sánchez de Miguel will conduct observations. Sánchez de Miguel is affiliated with the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia, the Complutense University of Madrid and the Stars4All Foundation.
