During one encounter with a spider, the warrior set his weapon ablaze, spreading the flames to his allies’ weapons. Together, they quickly defeated the creature as the fire traveled through its web and destroyed it. Guild Wars 3 allows players to adjust and customize their builds while exploring the open world, although certain build options remain locked until they return to their main hub.
“Customizing your build to make it easier to defeat different enemies has always been an important part of the Guild Wars series,” says Johansson. “It is one of the key pillars that Guild Wars 3 brings back, with an even greater emphasis on combat customization.”
Conditions applied to enemies can also stack in multiplayer. For example, when players repeatedly apply freezing effects, the accumulated cold gradually slows an enemy’s animations and attacks. As more players add additional cold damage, the enemy moves slower and slower until it eventually becomes a block of ice, temporarily preventing it from moving.
If the frozen enemy is low on health, a character with the Knock ability, such as the Warrior, can charge into the ice block. If the impact is fatal, the enemy shatters into fragments of ice that damage nearby foes, creating powerful opportunities for coordinated team attacks.
ArenaNet did not reveal every detail during the gameplay showcase, including information about the game’s spirit mounts. Following the first teaser, Johansson said more details would be shared in the future. He also confirmed that Guild Wars 3 will include player-versus-player (PvP) content and a “reliable and tailored dungeon-like experience.” The game’s combat is also designed to display far less user interface clutter than traditional MMOs.
ArenaNet says Guild Wars 3 will occupy a different place in the MMO market. The original Guild Wars is positioned on the smaller end of the spectrum, while Guild Wars 2 offers a much larger-scale experience. “This is what we call it internally: Guild Wars 3 is more meaningful,” Johansson explains. “Every player on the screen is important and makes a difference.”
The game will use an evolved version of the mega-server system found in Guild Wars 2. This technology is designed to reduce loading screens while limiting open-world combat areas to approximately 20 active players. The player count will increase significantly in social hubs, including cities and towns.
“There have been very few new MMOs in the past decade, and most of us are still playing the same games released 10 to 20 years ago,” Johansson says. “MMO fans are always looking for something new, and now is the right time to move the genre forward. I think this is the perfect moment for ArenaNet.”
More information about Guild Wars 3 is expected to emerge over the next year as the beta approaches. Until then, players can return to Guild Wars 2, which has recently seen a surge of new players. As the Norn say, “May the spirits guide you.”
