Cronos Blockchain Restarts After $74 Million Tectonic Price Manipulation Exploit
The Cronos blockchain has resumed operations after a price manipulation attack against the Tectonic decentralized finance (DeFi) lending platform enabled attackers to borrow approximately $74 million in digital assets.
According to current reports, the attackers artificially increased the price of Tectonic’s TONIC token by roughly 100 times and used the inflated token value as collateral to borrow other assets. The manipulation reportedly occurred within a 20-minute period.
Although the exploit generated approximately $74 million in borrowed funds, blockchain security and analytics company PeckShield said the attackers appear to have stolen only about $6 million worth of Ethereum. The remaining assets are reportedly “stuck” on the Cronos blockchain.
Cronos is an Ethereum-compatible blockchain network associated with Crypto.com. Tectonic is a DeFi lending protocol built on the Cronos network that allows users to deposit cryptocurrency and borrow assets using their holdings as collateral.
Before the incident, Tectonic was the largest lending protocol on Cronos, with approximately $122 million in total value locked. Following the exploit, Tectonic’s holdings fell to just under $3 million, according to DefiLlama.
On August 30, Tectonic announced that it was investigating the incident. The platform advised users not to interact with its protocols until it confirms that its services are secure.
Cronos responded to the suspected exploit by pausing blockchain operations and freezing transactions that were in progress at the time.
The network later resumed block production, notifying users that “blocks have been generated again and it’s fully back online.”
“This was an emergency measure of validator consensus to protect users from exploits of the Tectonic protocol,” Cronos said.
“Since this morning, the state of the chain has returned to its pre-Tectonic state. As of 2026-08-30 23:49:01 UTC, Cronos is generating blocks again from block 90,896,189.”
Cronos said the blockchain is being closely monitored for stability, protocol compatibility, and other potential issues following the restart.
The company also said it plans to publish a detailed postmortem report with additional information about the Tectonic exploit and the measures taken to protect the network.
