Jackie, the California bald eagle who became an online sensation through the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, has died after weeks of intensive veterinary care.
The bald eagle was being treated at the Ojai Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation organisation, after sustaining injuries in an attack by other eagles. She also had underlying health problems that contributed to anaemia and significant weight loss.
“Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists,” the Ojai Raptor Center said in a statement.
A livestream of Jackie’s Big Bear Valley nest, which she shared with her mate Shadow, has attracted hundreds of thousands of subscribers and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
The Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam is operated by the California-based nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley. Jackie became a familiar sight to viewers after hatching in the area in spring 2012.
According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley website, Jackie and Shadow had been mates since 2018.
“Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her,” the Ojai Raptor Center said.
“We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her and supported the people caring for her.”
The centre said it is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. A more detailed statement, including further information about Jackie’s treatment and test results, will be released later.
Jackie’s remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, according to the Ojai Raptor Center.
