Microsoft has confirmed that a known Windows 11 bug resetting mouse settings after the KB5120998 August 2026 Preview Update affects only devices configured with non-English languages.
The issue was confirmed on Friday, one day after Microsoft released KB5120998 for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. The optional update includes improvements to the Start menu, Taskbar, and Windows Search.
After installing KB5120998, users reported that their customized mouse cursor settings were automatically changed or restored to the Windows defaults. Some affected users also said they could not restore their previous mouse settings after reverting the update.
Microsoft initially explained that the update could cause mouse personalization settings to revert to standard configurations.
“After installing Windows updates (KB5120998) and later released on August 27, 2026, mouse personalization settings will be reverted to certain standard settings,” Microsoft said.
“This includes the cursor and cursor animation selected in the Windows Mouse Properties option.”
Windows 11 mouse bug affects non-English devices
In an update to the Windows Release Health Dashboard on Tuesday, Microsoft said further investigation found that the mouse settings issue is limited to Windows 11 devices using non-English language settings.
“Our research indicates that this issue is caused by a code component used in non-English Windows installations. In affected locales, these settings cannot be loaded and the defaults are used instead,” Microsoft said.
KB5120998 is an optional, non-security update, which means users must manually select the Download and install link in Windows Update. However, preview updates may be installed automatically when the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available option is enabled.
Microsoft has addressed several other Windows mouse-related problems in recent months.
For example, in October, the company released an emergency update to fix a known issue that made the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) unusable by disabling USB-connected mice and keyboards.
Microsoft also recently acknowledged a bug affecting some classic Outlook users that causes the mouse pointer to disappear while moving it around the application interface.
On Wednesday, the company confirmed another KB5120998-related problem in which some Windows 11 devices may lose or reset their desktop settings after installing the preview update.
