NASA Awards $38 Million Contract for 5G and Wi-Fi 6 Communications on the Moon
NASA has signed a contract with Modulate Space Corporation to develop key elements of a lunar 5G communications system, including Wi-Fi 6, for NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.
Scalable Lunar Communications for Future Moon Bases
The accelerated effort will focus on two major work areas. Together, they will develop scalable, standards-based communications capabilities designed to support future lunar base ground operations.
NASA Lunar 5G Contract and Demonstration Timeline
The fixed-price contract, covering 5G systems, lunar communications evaluation, and radio wave propagation measurements, is valued at approximately $38 million.
5G Network-in-a-Box Development
The 5G Network-in-a-Box development and laboratory demonstration period runs from Thursday, October 1, to January 31, 2028.
Lunar 5G and Wi-Fi Integrated Surface Network
The Lunar 5G and Wi-Fi Integrated Surface Network and Lunar Flight Demonstration will run from Monday, November 30, 2028, to December 31, 2028.
Advancing NASA’s Lunar Integrated Communications System
Through these demonstrations, NASA will obtain the hardware, firmware, and software technology needed to advance the Lunar Integrated Communications System.
The effort will give NASA insight into system architecture and operational performance while providing the flexibility needed to evolve communications technology for future lunar missions.
