The Optoma GT2400HDR is not designed to rival a commercial movie theater, so its limitations are easier to overlook. In Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox Series X, the image looked good overall, although the subdued contrast made the game feel overly atmospheric. At times, the picture resembled an LCD computer monitor more than a dedicated home theater projector.
The GT2400HDR was less convincing with games featuring highly detailed, colorful graphics, including Halo: Campaign Evolution. Instead of producing a rich, vibrant forest, the projector displayed trees in a flat, muted green. In the Havana level of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, the blue clothing, yellow fruit, and green foliage lacked the vivid color expected from the game.
Television news broadcasts and previously recorded World Cup matches also appeared somewhat flat and washed out. Still, the projector handled a challenging moonlit bicycle scene in Awake better than expected, preserving visible faces and some color detail. By comparison, House of the Dragon, streamed through the HBO app on a Google TV streamer, looked noticeably washed out until I switched to Vivid picture mode, which delivered a modest improvement.
A scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 showed that Cinema picture mode can add some much-needed color and depth. Super Mario Galaxy remained less vibrant and sharp than usual, with the low contrast making it look like it was playing on an inexpensive computer monitor. However, YouTube TV delivered better results with ARK, particularly in bright indoor scenes where the colors appeared more vivid.
Overall, the Optoma GT2400HDR delivered acceptable results in my tests, but it performed best as a golf simulator projector. It can operate through multiple rounds, offers low input latency for responsive controller movements, and produces a large, bright image on a projector screen in a dark room. While its movie, television, and gaming performance is generally average, golfers seeking an affordable entry-level simulator projector may find the GT2400HDR to be an excellent value.
