A SpaceX rocket has made a surprising appearance off the coast of Christmas Island after landing in the Indian Ocean following a test flight launched from Texas on 24 July.
David Watchoon, president of the Christmas Island Tourism Association, initially thought he was looking at a ship while travelling to work. He soon realised it was a “rocket, a space rocket” being towed through the water.
The 52-metre-long SpaceX rocket has sparked widespread interest among local residents. Some have been “sneaking out” to watch crews work on it, while others have prepared boats to get a closer look at the rocket debris.
“It’s just unbelievable considering what I’ve been through,” Watchoon told the BBC.
“The more you look at it, the more attractive it becomes.”
