The Risks and Dangers of Artificial Intelligence

As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, experts are urging governments, businesses, schools and the public to focus on its potential risks—including bias, misinformation, privacy concerns and its impact on creative industries.

AI Bias and Discrimination

Many AI systems are trained using publicly available data that reflects existing social inequalities. As a result, artificial intelligence can reproduce biases related to race, gender and other social groups, potentially leading to unfair or discriminatory decisions.

AI Hallucinations and False Information

Although AI tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated, they remain vulnerable to errors. Generative AI systems can “hallucinate,” presenting false claims as facts or creating inaccurate sources and references.

Technology companies have faced criticism over these problems. In early 2025, Apple paused its AI-powered notification summary feature after it incorrectly summarized news alerts. Google has also faced criticism over inaccurate information generated by its AI search summaries.

Concerns About AI in Schools and the Workplace

The use of AI in education and employment has created new challenges. Some students use AI tools to complete assignments dishonestly, while others have been wrongly accused of using artificial intelligence. In the workplace, employees may use unapproved AI tools to complete tasks, potentially creating security, privacy and compliance risks.

Artists and Writers Push Back Against AI

Writers, musicians, actors and visual artists are also challenging AI companies over ethical concerns. Thousands of creators have accused technology developers of using copyrighted work to train AI systems without permission, payment or proper attribution.

Among those supporting public criticism of the industry are ABBA singer-songwriter Björn Ulvaeus, writers Ian Rankin and Joanne Harris, and actress Julianne Moore. In October 2024, a statement signed by thousands of creators described unregulated AI development as a “serious and unwarranted threat” to creative livelihoods.

The Need for Responsible AI Development

These concerns highlight the importance of developing artificial intelligence responsibly. Stronger safeguards, transparent training practices, accurate fact-checking and clear rules for AI use could help reduce the risks while allowing society to benefit from the technology.
