Macaroni Penguins Surge as Antarctic Warming Reshapes Penguin Community
Macaroni penguins are increasing dramatically on the island as the local baleen population declines, highlighting how rapidly Antarctica’s unique ecosystem is changing.
Why Macaroni Penguins Are Thriving
Scientists say macaroni penguins have a broader, more flexible diet, which may make them better adapted to changing conditions.
Tracking data shows that the macaroni penguins forage in warmer waters northeast of the island. Researchers say the birds likely supplement their diet with fish and other crustaceans.
One of Antarctica’s Largest Recorded Ecosystem Shifts
Dr Ratcliffe said the change was “the largest change in community composition ever observed at a single site in Antarctica.”
“Our data show that cold-adapted Antarctic chinstrap species are no longer thriving next to their sub-Antarctic neighbors,” he added.
“This is further evidence of how Antarctica’s rapid warming is impacting its unique and sensitive ecosystem.”
Where Is the World’s Largest Penguin Colony?
Scientists say the title of the world’s largest penguin colony is currently held by Cape Adare in the Ross Sea, on the other side of Antarctica, more than 5,000 kilometers away.
Research is published in the journal Current Biology.
