Zoe Schiffer: Not really; it peaked fast for me. I haven’t thought about it since. This sentiment extends to other AI hardware and devices like Humane AI’s well-known pins. Many tasks are better suited for a screen, and I doubt that will change. However, if the agent and voice mode operate effectively, there are tasks you can delegate to the agent, reducing the need to constantly look at the screen. Personally, as someone who grapples with screen dependency, I welcome technology that offers a more balanced interaction. Yet, achieving this is tricky, and I haven’t encountered a product that really nails it. To clarify, the ongoing lawsuit reveals that OpenAI has over 400 former Apple employees on their team.
Leah Figer: Oh.
Zoe Schiffer: Additionally, last year OpenAI invested $6.5 billion to acquire IO Products, a startup co-founded by notable former Apple executives, including Tan, Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey, and, most famously, Jony Ive.
Brian Barrett: This is a significant commitment in the AI landscape, and it must be painful for Apple to lose so many talents. Moreover, AI researchers have also been recruited by competing companies. Apple’s stock of AI talent has diminished significantly, and now their hardware expertise is being depleted as well, impacting them where it counts. What intrigues me most about this entire situation is that we are not fully there yet; litigation often brings about discovery—
Zoe Schiffer: Yay.
Brian Barrett: I did it, I uncovered it. This discovery means we’ll be seeing numerous emails between these companies critiquing one another, which will be quite fulfilling. I always find joy when something like this unfolds.

Brian Barrett: OpenAI’s challenges are not limited to the recent lawsuit against Apple. WIRED has learned that OpenAI staff are backing a rival super PAC focused on advocating for stricter regulations on Frontier AI Labs. This aligns with the investments OpenAI executives, like Greg Brockman, are making to enhance AI safety and establish necessary guardrails. This new super PAC is termed Guardrails Alliance and was launched last month.
