Killer whales (Orcinus orca) were observed ramming a sunfish (Mastrus orchiolatus) with such intensity that it exploded. In this brutal display, a female killer whale held a dead sunfish for the male to lunge at. Subsequently, juvenile killer whales feasted on pieces of the fish, while the adult pair nibbled on the carcass. “This could provide easier access to food for young killer whales,” explained marine ecologist Kathryn Ayers, a co-author of the study. “Or perhaps they’re simply enjoying a game. Killer whales are known for their playful nature.”

Today, I was reminded of the unexpected utility of mathematics. Screenwriter Ken Keeler found himself in a dilemma while scripting an episode of the 2010 animated series Futurama.
After a series of body-swapping pranks, the episode’s nine characters, along with Keeler, faced the challenge of returning to their original bodies without repeating swaps.
Luckily, Keeler could lean on his Ph.D. in mathematics to devise a unique proof to unravel the situation. This solution required the involvement of two additional characters, both fictitious math experts, who facilitated comprehension for the rest of the cast—and the audience.
