Apple Reportedly Plans AI Server With M8 Ultra Chips for 2029

Apple is reportedly developing an enterprise AI server powered by the company’s high-performance M-series Ultra chips, with a potential release planned for 2029. If launched, it would be Apple’s first server product in nearly two decades and could help the company capitalize on the growing popularity of Apple hardware among AI developers.

Apple’s AI server could use two or four M8 Ultra chips

The reported enterprise server would be available in two configurations, using either two or four of Apple’s future M8 Ultra chips, according to The Information.

The project reportedly received support from Apple CEO John Ternus about a year ago, when he was leading the company’s hardware engineering efforts.

Growing demand for Macs from AI developers

The reported server project comes as sales of Apple’s Mac mini and Mac Studio increase among AI developers and enterprises using Mac computers for AI workloads. The popularity of systems powered by Apple’s M-series Ultra chips may have encouraged the company to explore enterprise servers built around the same technology.

The Information reported that AI companies including OpenAI have purchased “tens of thousands” of Mac minis and Mac Studios to train AI agents through trial-and-error reinforcement learning. Anthropic also rents Mac minis from Amazon Web Services.
