Gift in Will Set to Double Size of Staffordshire Nature Reserve

A generous gift left in a will will help double the size of Jackson’s Coppice and Marsh Nature Reserve near Eccleshall, Staffordshire, wildlife conservation groups say.

The donation has secured additional land at the nature reserve, including areas of moist woodland and wetland along the meadows south of the So River.

New land will support wildlife and reduce flood risk

Plans for the newly acquired floodplain include creating public footpaths and managing the river to slow its flow during periods of heavy rain.

Under Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s ownership, the floodplain will help slow the river and mitigate downstream flooding. Plans also include clearing mature alder and managing willow growth to support a greater diversity of plants and wildlife.

Geoff Sim, from Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, said: “This is great news for wildlife and a great example of how gifts in a will can make a lasting difference to nature.”

The donation was made by Trust supporter David Aldred.

Public footpaths planned at expanded nature reserve

The reserve’s expansion will include public footpaths across the new land, allowing visitors to explore a variety of trails, the trust said.

“We can restore habitat on a much larger scale and make a huge difference to the wildlife that lives, feeds and reproduces in these places,” Mr Sim added.
