At the beginning of the year, we got to see what Xiaomi’s first car would look like, and now we know its name. Judging by the latest news, the Chinese giant has surpassed its IT rivals who have previously announced their entry into the world of cars. “Xiaomi” is the first of them to enter the market of four wheels, with an electric model that will be called “Modena”.

Xiaomi announced its car development plan two years ago, and already in January of this year we could see the first images of the new model. Last month, the company received a government certificate for the eventual start of production.

The new model is codenamed “MS11”, but some media reports that the model will be called “Modena”. Car News China reports that production of the first trial run has already begun, at a rate of 50 cars per week.

Xiaomi is still waiting for permission from China’s Ministry of Economy and Information Technology, and once it gets it, sales will start very soon. It is expected to cost around $27,400 and will compete with the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal in the Chinese market.

Technical information is scarce, and a battery with a capacity of 101 kWh is mentioned, which would mean a range of up to 800 km.
