Skullcandy headphones have often been criticized for their sound quality. However, the brand has taken significant steps over the past year to revamp its image and deliver better audio experiences.
The journey began in 2025 with a strategic partnership with Bose, leading to the launch of the Skullcandy Method 360 ANC. This $130 model of wireless earbuds showcases impressive sound quality and effective noise cancellation for its price point.
Next on Skullcandy’s upgrade list are the notorious Crusher headphones. These wireless headphones have been a staple for over a decade, celebrated for their unique feature that allows users to enhance bass vibrations via a thumbwheel located on the ear cup. When fully turned, the Crusher delivers an unprecedented bass experience that resonates against your skull, thanks to its innovative driver design.
In an exciting announcement made during a recent event in New York City, Skullcandy unveiled the Crusher 1080 ANC, which is now available for purchase.
These latest headphones provide the sensation of a powerful subwoofer, creating the feeling of being in the front row at a concert—albeit often compromising on mid and treble clarity. To address this, Skullcandy is once again leveraging Bose’s audio expertise to enhance its acoustic performance.
Skullcandy proudly states that its journey began in 2003 on a ski lift in Park City, Utah. The brand has since carved a niche in the boardsports community.
“Snowboarder to snowboarder,” says Skullcandy CEO Brian Garofalou in an interview with WIRED. Despite its acquisition by Mill Road Capital, Skullcandy maintains a strong lifestyle branding presence rather than being viewed solely as an audio company.
Garofalou explains, “We excel in community building and cultural influence, but our engineering innovation has room for improvement.” He emphasizes that the company has refined its skills over the last few years.
Integrating proprietary Crusher bass boost technology with noise cancellation posed a unique challenge. Collaborating with Bose engineers allowed Skullcandy to achieve a distinct separation of acoustic tuning profiles, enabling a rich low-end response without sacrificing mid and treble clarity. “This improvement makes the sound crisp compared to previous models,” Garofalou notes.
Moreover, Skullcandy’s new Crusher headphones feature enhancements from Bose sound technology, ensuring exceptional performance with the bass at elevated levels. They offer Bose’s renowned spatial audio experience for immersive sound, along with a six-microphone array that enhances call clarity, synonymous with Bose’s quality.
