Bitcoin is the best-known cryptocurrency, a form of digital money that operates without control from a central financial institution. Its decentralized structure has attracted supporters who associate it with financial freedom, but its price remains highly volatile, with sharp increases and declines shaped by market activity, political developments and investor sentiment. The identity of its creator, known only as Satoshi Nakamoto, also remains unknown.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, or digital currency, designed to operate independently of traditional financial institutions. Unlike conventional currencies, it is not controlled by a centralized bank or other single authority.
This decentralized model has made Bitcoin popular with people who believe it can support greater financial freedom. However, the cryptocurrency’s value can fluctuate significantly as buyers and sellers respond to changing market conditions.
Bitcoin’s price and political attention
Donald Trump has walked back his previous description of Bitcoin as a “scam” and vowed to make the United States the “crypto capital of the world.”
Bitcoin reached the long-anticipated $100,000 mark in December 2024 and then reached $120,000 in July 2025, as US politicians prepared to debate legislation regulating digital assets.
In October 2025, Bitcoin reached an all-time high of around $126,000. The increase was driven by a continuing wave of institutional investment and positive market sentiment. However, the cryptocurrency’s value has also been known to fall as quickly as it rises.
In early February 2026, Bitcoin’s price dropped below $65,000, effectively wiping out the gains made under President Trump.
The mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto
Against the backdrop of Bitcoin’s frequent price fluctuations, speculation continues over the identity of its mysterious inventor, who is known only as Satoshi Nakamoto.
