Warmer weather is bringing increased disturbances to vulnerable and fragile seahorses in UK waters, conservationists have warned.
Seahorses are legally protected in the UK. Anyone planning to search for, photograph or film them must first obtain a wildlife licence.
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is increasing public awareness of seahorse protection laws following a rise in reported incidents, including both accidental encounters and deliberate disturbances.
Education campaigns are being prioritised in Poole Harbour and Studland Bay in Dorset, as well as Torbay in Devon—areas known to support some of the UK’s most important seahorse populations.
An MMO spokesperson said: “We have recorded more incidents involving people unintentionally encountering seahorses while swimming, diving or crabbing.
“There have also been cases of people diving or snorkelling with the apparent intention of filming or photographing seahorses.
“This deliberate activity may disturb these protected marine animals, could constitute an offence and requires a wildlife licence.”
