Microsoft is investigating a Microsoft 365 search outage affecting some users of Outlook on the web, Outlook for desktop, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive.
According to incident report MO1456424, published in the Microsoft 365 admin center and reviewed by BleepingComputer, the issue was caused by a recent development that led to inefficient resource utilization across affected infrastructure.
“The impact is specific to some users who are served through affected infrastructure and who are attempting to search for content in SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Outlook on the web, or Outlook desktop,” Microsoft said.
“Our investigation found that recent implementations have created issues and impacts of resource usage inefficiencies,” Microsoft added.
The company says it has developed and deployed a fix to reduce resource pressure and restore Microsoft 365 search functionality for all affected users.
Microsoft has not disclosed which regions were affected by the incident. However, the company classified it as an incident that typically indicates a major service problem with a noticeable impact on customers.
This is not the first time Microsoft 365 users have experienced search-related disruptions. Similar incidents reported last year affected file searches in OneDrive, Outlook on the web, and SharePoint Online.
In July, Microsoft also addressed a major outage that disrupted Azure and Microsoft 365 services for customers in North America. The outage was caused by a bug in an automated network maintenance request system that removed IP routes from more devices than intended.
On Monday, Microsoft resolved another major service disruption that affected GitHub, its website, APIs, and other services for more than eight hours. Users reported server errors when accessing GitHub, along with problems loading commits, repositories, and pull request pages.
