Microsoft is investigating a Windows 11 issue that can cause Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows to crash or fail to launch after users install updates released following the August 2026 Patch Tuesday.
The problem affects ARM-based Windows devices, including the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11, running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. The issue primarily impacts new or recently reimaged PCs that have not yet received Microsoft Store app updates.
According to a Microsoft Windows Release Health update, installing the Windows security update KB5121003, released after August 11, 2026, may prevent Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook from starting or cause them to close unexpectedly on affected ARM devices.
“After you install the Windows security update (KB5121003) released after August 11, 2026, Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows may not start or close unexpectedly on ARM-based devices such as Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7,” Microsoft said.
Microsoft added that legacy Outlook, Word, Excel, and other applications are not known to be affected. The issue is most likely to occur on new or newly imaged PCs that do not yet have the required Microsoft Store updates installed.
Although Microsoft has not disclosed the root cause, the company recommends updating the Automatic Super Resolution package as a temporary workaround. Microsoft says the package enables Copilot+ PCs to use artificial intelligence to improve supported games with smoother performance and enhanced detail.
To install the workaround, open the Microsoft Store, select Downloads or Library, choose Get updates, and install the Automatic Super Resolution package version 1.0.19.0 or later.
Microsoft is working on a permanent solution and plans to release it in a future Windows 11 update. Until then, affected users should ensure that Microsoft Store applications and packages are fully up to date.
This is the latest in a series of known problems linked to Windows updates released in August 2026. Microsoft recently confirmed that an August .NET Framework update could prevent printing and PDF export from working in some applications.
Microsoft has also begun rolling out a fix for an issue involving peripherals with built-in RGB lighting. The problem can trigger “EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION” errors, system crashes, and gaming-related problems on Windows 11 devices.
In addition, the company asked customers to ignore incorrect notifications claiming that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is disabled after installing the latest Defender update.
