How the UK Is Building the Future With AI, Accelerated Computing and Quantum Technology
The UK is adopting the full technology stack across industries at a rapidly growing scale. From established businesses transforming their operations to startups tackling the planet’s toughest challenges, organizations across the country are applying AI, accelerated computing and sovereign infrastructure to real-world problems.
NVIDIA expands support for UK AI research and innovation
NVIDIA is putting this approach into practice through a five-year, $250 million compute commitment to advance UK agentic AI safety and security research.
The initiative will deliver $50 million a year in high-speed computing access through Oxford University’s BOLD, UCL’s SOFAIR and Imperial College London.
NVIDIA has also joined the Earthshot Prize as a founding partner of the Global Alliance. The partnership provides computing and technology expertise to innovators developing solutions for the world’s biggest climate and sustainability challenges.
AI and accelerated computing are transforming UK industries
Across energy, healthcare, financial services, public-sector technology and quantum computing, UK organizations are developing practical applications for AI and high-performance computing.
Energy: faster AI customer support
In the energy sector, Fuse Energy is moving customer AI to in-house infrastructure built on NVIDIA B300 Blackwell Ultra. The system is designed to deliver faster, more responsive support to more than 450,000 UK households.
Sovereign AI and representative datasets
Lokai Labs has developed Nemotron-personas-UK, an open-source dataset containing 1 million synthetic personas representing the UK’s demographic, regional and cultural diversity. The dataset is intended to help developers build fairer and more representative AI systems.
Healthcare AI supports NHS services and medical research
The UK is also developing healthcare AI designed to support clinicians and patients. The UK’s first and most advanced fine-tuned large language model for primary care is being developed for AI triage, with the aim of supporting millions of NHS patients. The system is built with NVIDIA Agent Toolkit software and an open model.
Heidi is integrating the NVIDIA Nemotron open model to give clinicians rapid access to trusted medical evidence.
Speechmatics is introducing Oak, a multilingual medical voice-recognition model powered by NVIDIA Triton Inference. The technology gives healthcare organizations greater control over where sensitive patient voices are processed.
Apian, Shin Lab and NVIDIA are using advanced computing and digital simulation with NVIDIA Cosmos to help hospital robots move test samples. The goal is to reduce the manual workload for medical staff so they can focus more on patient care.
Danaher and NVIDIA are collaborating to accelerate autonomous science through accelerated computing, scientific AI and physical AI for laboratory workflows and equipment.
Danaher recently announced an AI-powered autonomous lab designed to make affinity reagent discovery up to eight times faster. The system uses NVIDIA BioNeMo open models in AI-driven protein design workflows, connects design data with experimental feedback and incorporates automation technology.
Smart cities and trusted public-sector AI
Liverpool City Region is building a NVIDIA-powered “City Brain” as part of a sovereign AI strategy designed to provide a blueprint for dozens of unitary authorities across the UK.
Digital Jersey, Innovation City Belfast and Tees Valley Combined Authority are each exploring how trusted AI computing can support communities and public services.
Financial services adopt AI for banking and payments
In financial services, LSEG and NVIDIA are providing GPU-accelerated market analytics to global institutions.
Revolut introduced PRAGMA earlier this year. The foundational model for banking event sequences was pretrained on 26 million anonymized user histories and has progressed from research to real-time scaling.
Lloyds Banking Group built Atum, a transaction-based model that transforms billions of banking transactions into reusable AI.
Starling is developing a bank infrastructure model trained on Seabo’s UK sovereign cloud infrastructure.
NatWest is working with NVIDIA on Nemotron Voice to better understand how banking customers across the UK speak. Modulr has deployed a network of Nemotron-powered agents across parts of its payments operations.
Quantum computing moves closer to practical deployment
Quantum technology is moving from research toward systems that can operate alongside classical AI, and the UK is at the heart of this transition.
Riverlane has shown how GPUs can accelerate decoder recalibration workflows used in quantum error correction. This can help decoder performance keep pace with real-time changes in quantum hardware behavior.
The research forms part of a broader collaboration exploring how AI, accelerated computing and quantum error-correction technologies can work together to support future quantum systems.
UK startups are driving the next wave of innovation
These developments demonstrate how UK businesses, organizations and startups are applying AI and accelerated computing across the economy. The NVIDIA Inception Program supports cutting-edge startups working on the next generation of technology.
