An astronaut photograph of Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands captures a striking natural phenomenon called sunglint. The reflection of sunlight turns sections of the Pacific Ocean and Lake Tegano into bright, metallic-looking patches, making the remote island appear as though it is shining from space.
Rennell Island, also known as Mgaba or Mngaba, is one of the southernmost islands in the Solomon Islands. The archipelago lies in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, between Australia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji, and consists of almost 1,000 islands, atolls and reefs. Rennell stretches for up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) and reaches approximately 8 miles (13 kilometers) across at its widest point.
Why Rennell Island appears to glow from space
At the island’s southeastern tip is Lake Tegano, a roughly 60-square-mile (155-square-kilometer) brackish lake surrounded by dense forest and a jagged coral rim. The silver appearance is caused by sunlight reflecting directly toward the International Space Station’s camera. This reflection is strongest across the horseshoe-shaped bay on the left side of Lake Tegano and near the island’s southern edge. These sheltered areas are less affected by wind, leaving the water smoother and more mirror-like. The effect is also visible across parts of the surrounding Pacific Ocean, according to NASA Earth Observatory.
Cloud shadows break up the ocean’s reflective surface, adding contrast and depth to the astronaut photograph.

What is sunglint?
Sunglint occurs when sunlight reflects off a relatively smooth water surface and shines directly into a camera or sensor. From orbit, the phenomenon can look like a bright silver trail or mirror-like patch across the sea. It can reveal subtle ocean features, including currents, internal waves and oil slicks that may be difficult to see in ordinary satellite imagery.
Sunglint can also occur on inland waters, such as rivers and lakes. However, the intense glare may hide important details and interfere with applications such as mapping, coastal monitoring and hurricane tracking. For this reason, satellite imagery is often processed to reduce or remove the sun’s reflection, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Rennell Island is the world’s highest raised atoll
Rennell Island is a raised atoll formed from the remains of an ancient coral reef. Over millions of years, geological uplift raised the former lagoon and coral platform above sea level. The island’s highest point reaches approximately 500 feet (150 meters), making Rennell the world’s highest raised atoll, according to Britannica.
Rennell Island’s fringing coral reef is usually visible as a pale blue or turquoise band around the coast.

The island is surrounded by fringing coral reefs that typically appear as pale blue or blue-green bands in aerial photographs. In the astronaut image, sunglint obscures much of the reef, just as it hides several small islands within Lake Tegano.

The Lake Tegano region forms part of East Rennell, a protected area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its forests, wetlands, reefs and lake ecosystems support an exceptional range of wildlife, including more than 20 endemic bird species.
East Rennell is also home to the endangered Crocker’s sea snake (Laticauda crockeri), a species found only in the Solomon Islands. The area’s isolation has allowed many plants and animals to evolve uniquely, making Rennell Island one of the Pacific’s most important biodiversity centers.
