The Resident Evil film series has amassed over $1.2 billion globally since the debut of the first movie in 2002. After a reboot attempt faltered, Sony Pictures is making a renewed effort, enlisting Zack Creger, the creative genius behind last year’s Oscar-winning horror sensation, Weapons. The first teaser of Creger’s Resident Evil was premiered at CinemaCon in April, with the full trailer unveiled at SDCC.
As per the official logline, “Resident Evil” follows Brian (Austin Abrams), a medical delivery driver who unwittingly finds himself amidst a chaotic struggle for survival on a terrifying night. The main cast features Paul Walter Hauser as Carl, Zach Cherry as Dave, Kari Reis as Pauline, and Jonno Wilson as Max.
According to Creger, this new installment is not a direct game adaptation but an original narrative with unique characters set in the same universe. He assured fans that while it diverges from Weapons, his vision for Resident Evil, likened to Evil Dead II, remains true to the essence of the game.
The trailer establishes Brian as a relatable, ordinary guy working as a medical delivery driver, transporting life-saving organs. On a frigid winter night, he accepts a risky emergency dispatch to Raccoon City outside the “Zone,” offering double pay. While driving and arguing with his pregnant girlfriend, he encounters a woman on the road and accidentally hits her.
Unbeknownst to Brian, she is a zombie, and he quickly realizes the grim reality. The footage shows him frantically searching for ammunition in a nearby house, where chaos has clearly unfolded. Other sections of Raccoon City are just as chaotic, with Carl commenting that “everything happened in this town in a matter of hours.” So much for Brian’s “no sweat” extra shifts.
Resident Evil is slated to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
