Sherry Boles, RDN, explains that during exercise or exposure to heat, humans tend to lose sodium. Carbohydrates are essential for replenishing muscle glycogen stores to prevent fatigue, particularly for activities lasting over 30 minutes. If your exercise is intense and you’re not replacing lost carbohydrates, fatigue can set in quicker. To counteract this, carbs should be replenished every 30 to 45 minutes, with sugars like glucose playing a similar role.
If you’re seeking a supplement for everyday hydration or to alleviate a hangover, high levels of sodium or carbohydrates in electrolyte powder are unnecessary. Brownstein advises making choices that align with your daily eating habits. Most individuals already meet the recommended intake of 2,300 milligrams of sodium daily, so unless you’re significantly exercising, a low-sodium powder may suffice. The same principle applies to sugar.
Determining your specific needs can be achieved through a sweat test that analyzes your sweat’s composition. However, for non-medical needs, opt for a powder with moderate ingredient concentrations, except if you sweat heavily, train under high temperatures, or exercise at altitude—then, increasing sodium and sugar levels is advisable. Brownstein adds that if you notice white residue on your skin or clothes post-exercise, it might be time to boost your sodium intake.
Regarding synthetic dyes, Boles indicates the choice ultimately lies with personal preference. Thankfully, many recommended powders exclude these components to cater to your preferences.
To prevent stomach upset, Boles suggests selecting powders low in magnesium, as excessive amounts can have a laxative effect. Additionally, calcium and iron may hinder each other’s absorption, so opt for a powder with a balanced ratio. Brownstein advises checking labels to avoid supplement overdoses or excessive caffeine, as high sugar and sodium levels can irritate your stomach.
