Ukraine Reports Major Russian Missile and Drone Attack on Energy Infrastructure
Ukraine said it was working with military officials to resolve an issue through the Coordination Center in Wiesbaden, Germany, a hub for military contacts between Ukraine and Western governments.
The White House, SpaceX and Elon Musk did not respond to requests for comment.
“Hey @elonmusk, big guy, are you playing politics with your product again? As a European customer, we’re looking at you,” Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski wrote on Musk’s social media platform, X.
Ukraine says Russian attack damaged energy facilities
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was scheduled to travel to London on Wednesday morning to meet Prime Minister Andy Burnham, said Ukraine had “once again” received no early warning from its partners before a Russian ballistic missile struck Kyiv’s energy infrastructure. The attack hit part of the city’s major combined heat and energy system.
“Our systems detected these missiles when they were already practically approaching Kyiv,” Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy said the Russian military launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones overnight and into the morning, targeting energy and critical infrastructure. He said the strikes hit “the very infrastructure that is subject to the ceasefire announced by the president of the United States.”
The attack was concentrated on Kyiv and Kharkiv. Ukraine’s Air Force said it intercepted four missiles.
The Ukrainian president said the strikes caused “significant damage to facilities and equipment” at 26 sites in the country’s electricity system and four facilities in the oil and gas sector. At least 600,000 people were without power on Wednesday morning, while Kyiv authorities reported that at least two people were killed and more than 20 were injured.
Zelenskiy calls for tougher sanctions against Russia
“This attack was completely deliberate and demonstrative in its scale,” Zelenskiy said. “Russia has never shown such blatant contempt for the United States.”
He said the United States needed to “understand who is responsible for the continuation of this war,” and called on Washington to respond to the attack. He also urged Ukraine’s partners to impose tougher sanctions on Russia.
“Ukraine supported an energy ceasefire. Russia is targeting yet another power plant and the lives of its people,” Zelenskiy said.
