Valve’s Lepton Compatibility Layer Brings Android APKs to SteamOS
Valve wants gamers to consider Arm-based hardware without worrying that they will lose access to part of their game catalog. As Valve engineer Griffais explained, the goal is to make Arm devices competitive on specifications and value without forcing players to choose between new hardware and their existing games.
Lepton Brings Android Games to SteamOS
The second compatibility layer coming to Steam is Lepton, an extension of the existing Waydroid project. It is designed to run standard Android APKs on SteamOS through software containers.
Lepton is especially important for Steam Frame. Many standalone VR games played on the device were originally developed for Android-based Meta Quest headsets, making Android compatibility a key part of Valve’s VR strategy.

How Many Steam Frame Games Use Android Executables?
Many Android-based VR titles already had Windows ports for compatibility with earlier SteamVR headsets. However, it appears that several current Steam Frame games run as APKs through the Lepton compatibility layer.
A recent deep dive into Steam metadata found that 52 of the first 120 games rated “Great on Frame” run on Steam Frame as translated Android executables through Lepton.
Three games listed on the Steam storefront—the first, second, and third—do not list Windows, Mac, or Linux versions. Their store pages also do not provide desktop system requirements.
Could Lepton Run More Than VR Games?
“They’re VR developers who actually want to publish VR content, and they’re porting mobile VR titles that they already know how to create APKs for,” Valve engineer Jeremy Selan told The Verge last year. “You’ll be free to bring them to Steam, and they’ll only work on this device.”
That raises a broader question: could Android developers use Lepton to run generic Android apps and non-VR games on SteamOS?
Valve’s Lawrence Yang told The Verge, “We’ve never prevented people from doing that,” while adding that Valve is “a games company” focused on games.
SteamOS Moves Beyond Bespoke Linux Ports
Whether Lepton leads to a broader wave of Android apps on Steam remains unclear. Still, Valve has come a long way from asking developers to create bespoke Linux ports for the first version of SteamOS.
Perhaps Valve and the community can finally turn their attention to completing the compatibility layer that runs Apple II games directly on SteamOS.
