Unearthed during a tombstone restoration project at Boston’s Granary Burial Grounds, the gravestone of an individual known simply as “Boston,” a former slave who passed away in 1729 as a free man.
Historical investigations led to discoveries about Sebastian’s life, known for his diligence around the town and posthumously ensuring the freedom of another former slave.
“It’s been there all along, we just needed to uncover and share that story,” remarked Boston Mayor Michelle Wu during a July 4th address.
