Recently, a satellite traversing Earth’s orbit and the Van Allen belts sparked worries about possible nuclear weaponry onboard. A detonation in this orbit could devastate much of our planet’s space infrastructure. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty strictly forbids such actions, but technological challenges in verification and monitoring have persisted for decades.
In this month’s Nature magazine, Tom Whipple, along with MIT’s Professor Areg Danagoulian, an expert in nuclear science and engineering, discusses an innovative method for detecting thermonuclear fusion devices in orbital space.
