A spectacular partial lunar eclipse will take place on the night of August 27–28, shortly after the total solar eclipse on August 12. During this rare celestial event, Earth’s shadow will cover more than 96% of the full moon. Although the eclipse will fall just short of totality—and therefore will not technically be a “blood moon”—much of the lunar surface is expected to glow a striking copper-red color.
This will be the deepest lunar eclipse visible worldwide until the next total lunar eclipse on December 31, 2028. The event is expected to be one of the best opportunities in years for lunar observation and moon photography.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to view with the naked eye. The various stages unfold gradually over several hours, giving observers plenty of time to watch, photograph, and enjoy the changing appearance of the moon. Solar and lunar eclipses often occur within the same eclipse season. This period lasts roughly 34 days, when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned closely enough for an eclipse to occur. A solar eclipse happens during a new moon, when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. About two weeks later, the alignment can produce a lunar eclipse as the full moon moves through Earth’s shadow.
Observers across North and South America should be able to see every phase of the August 27–28 lunar eclipse high in the night sky. Viewers in Europe will have a different but equally photogenic experience, with the eclipsed moon setting in the west before dawn.

Do I need solar eclipse glasses to view the lunar eclipse?
No. Lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope. Solar filters and special eye protection are not required.
Will the August 27–28 eclipse be a blood moon?
Not technically. A “blood moon” is a total lunar eclipse, when the entire Moon passes into Earth’s darkest shadow, or umbra. During this partial lunar eclipse, approximately 96% of the Moon will enter the umbra, leaving a thin, sunlit section visible. However, much of the lunar surface may still take on a dramatic red or copper color.
Can I photograph the lunar eclipse with a smartphone?
Yes. A smartphone can capture wide-angle photos of the eclipsed moon above buildings, landscapes, and mountains. Use a tripod or another stable support for sharper results. To photograph detailed close-ups of the Moon, you will need binoculars, a telephoto lens, or a telescope.
What camera settings should I use for a lunar eclipse?
Begin with settings suitable for a bright full moon, such as ISO 100, f/8 to f/11, and a shutter speed of around 1/100 to 1/125 second. As the eclipse progresses and the Moon darkens, gradually increase the exposure. Photograph in RAW format and use exposure bracketing to preserve flexibility during editing.
