ADHD affects millions of people worldwide and can make everyday tasks—such as concentrating, controlling impulses, and maintaining attention—more challenging. However, many traits associated with ADHD are also found among highly successful artists, athletes, and innovators, including Justin Timberlake and Simone Biles. A new study led by neuroscientist Dr. Radwa Khalil of Constructor University explores the neurological connection between ADHD, attention, and creativity.
Published in iScience, the study examines the overlap between attention and creative thinking. Its findings suggest that some mental processes associated with ADHD, including inattention and free-associative thinking, may support creativity when they are guided in productive ways. The research also indicates that creative activities such as art, music, and dance could eventually contribute to non-pharmacological support strategies for ADHD, which affects approximately 8% of children worldwide.
Rethinking ADHD Beyond Its Challenges
The study, co-authored by researchers from several leading French institutions, reflects a growing effort to develop a more complete understanding of ADHD and neurodiversity.
“Attention-related conditions like ADHD tend to be viewed purely through the lens of deficits: what’s wrong, what’s missing, and what needs to be fixed,” Dr. Khalil said.
Although ADHD is commonly defined by difficulties with attention and impulse control, emerging research suggests that attention and creativity rely on some of the same neural networks, Khalil explained.
“Neurodivergent attention patterns are therefore not just a problem; if properly directed, they can pave the way for powerful creative thinking,” she said.
The study, titled Attention Unleashed: Creative Therapy for Thoughtful Change, brings together findings from multiple research fields to examine how brain systems involved in attention overlap with those associated with creativity.
Researchers highlight free-associative thinking as one example of this relationship. The ability to move between ideas in unexpected ways may contribute to creative insight. However, similar thought patterns can also be linked to inattention, distractibility, and other behaviors commonly associated with ADHD.
ADHD and a Broader Perspective on Attention
Khalil uses the image of a spotlight to explain how ADHD-related attention may differ from typical patterns of focus.
“Think of your attention like a spotlight. Most people can focus their beam on one thing. A brain with ADHD may shine a broader spotlight, taking in more information at once. This can make everyday tasks that require sustained concentration difficult. However, this broader perspective—or what may appear to be distraction—can promote exploratory thinking, encourage new combinations of ideas, and stimulate creativity.”
In other words, a broad attentional focus can create challenges when a task requires concentration on a single goal. Yet the same tendency to absorb more information and move between different ideas may encourage exploration and make it easier to form unexpected connections.
The Potential Therapeutic Benefits of Creativity
Khalil and her colleagues believe the connection between ADHD and creativity could have practical implications for ADHD support and related conditions.
Creative activities such as art, music, dance, writing, and games may give people with ADHD a structured way to explore their ideas while engaging their attention. Researchers also suggest that creative tasks could help strengthen neural networks involved in attention control and influence patterns associated with impulsivity and hyperactivity.
“Authentic creative expression is more than a fun pastime,” Dr. Khalil said. “It engages neural circuits involved in attentional control, essentially helping to train the brain. For children with ADHD, the experience of being ‘in the moment’ while creating art or playing music may enhance focus by working with their natural cognitive style rather than against it.”
More Research on ADHD and Creativity Is Needed
Despite the potential benefits, researchers emphasize that the relationship between creativity and attention is not yet fully understood.
To address these gaps, the study proposes a framework for future research, including greater collaboration across disciplines, new research methods, and longitudinal studies that track changes over time.
Khalil says that significant changes to ADHD treatment will require extensive research involving neuroscientists, art therapists, clinicians, educators, and other specialists. This interdisciplinary approach could help determine when creative therapies are most effective and how they might complement existing ADHD interventions.
