One of 2023’s biggest cinematic surprises was director Takashi Yamazaki’s grounded and emotionally powerful Godzilla Minus One. The acclaimed monster movie became an international box-office hit and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This fall, Yamazaki returns with the highly anticipated sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero.
Toho has unveiled a full-length IMAX trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, featuring the return of the legendary monster and a distinctive roar that appears to tease the arrival of another iconic kaiju: the three-headed King Ghidorah.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for the 2023 film.
Godzilla Minus One follows Koichi Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot haunted by survivor’s guilt after failing to confront Godzilla during the monster’s attack on Japan’s Odo Island in 1945. After losing consciousness, Koichi awakens to discover that he is one of only two survivors. The other, mechanic Sosaku Tachibana, is furious with him.
Koichi’s life is further shattered by the loss of his parents and countless others during the Tokyo air raids of World War II. Eventually, he begins rebuilding his future with Noriko, a woman he meets after the war, and Akiko, the orphan Noriko rescued. When Godzilla returns and devastates Japan, Koichi resolves to face the monster and sacrifice himself to atone for what happened on Odo Island.
However, Koichi survives thanks to Tachibana’s forgiveness and the ingenuity of the plan used to defeat Godzilla. He later reunites with Noriko, who bears a mysterious black mark on her neck. The film’s closing moments also show Godzilla’s remains beginning to regenerate, leaving the door open for a sequel.
That sequel has now arrived. According to the official synopsis, Godzilla Minus Zero:
