AI Energy Management Alliance Aims to Build Grid-Ready AI Data Centers

Emerald AI, Google and NVIDIA have announced the launch of the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), a first-of-its-kind alliance focused on data centers that can dynamically manage their power usage based on grid conditions.
This power flexibility could help enable faster, larger-scale connections for AI infrastructure while supporting the energy systems and communities that make its growth possible. Using more watts from existing infrastructure can reduce the environmental impact per watt and support energy affordability.

Why Power Flexibility Matters for AI Infrastructure
Power is a critical constraint on the expansion of U.S. AI infrastructure.
Traditional interconnection processes were designed for facilities with relatively flat electricity demand. They were not built for computing infrastructure that can respond intelligently when power systems are constrained.
Flexible data centers can adjust the amount of power they draw from the grid in several ways, including shifting computing workloads, discharging energy storage, using paired generation and responding to system emergencies. These capabilities allow large power customers to act as controllable resources rather than inflexible loads.
Using flexibility effectively can help make better use of existing grid capacity, reduce demand during periods of system stress and avoid or postpone costly infrastructure upgrades. It can also give utilities and grid operators greater confidence that AI facilities can be connected on a shorter timeline.
Technology-Agnostic, Performance-Based Requirements
AEMA is technology agnostic and performance based. Its focus is on the measurable services a facility can provide, including response speed, duration, predictability and emergency behavior, rather than the specific hardware or software it uses.
Reliability remains paramount. The Alliance Principles require participants to:
- Define ride-through, containment and emergency response obligations before a facility connects. This establishes clear expectations for maintaining connectivity during brief grid outages, reducing power usage when necessary and responding to emergencies.
- Standardize the sharing of technical requirements, performance metrics and operational data.
- Create a faster, risk-adjusted path for customers to deliver reliable and verifiable flexibility commitments.
- Allocate interconnection costs according to real-world system impacts and benefits, including avoided upgrades and improved ramping capabilities.
These measures can reduce uncertainty for developers while providing system operators with the information and control needed to maintain grid reliability.
Connecting the AI and Energy Value Chains
AEMA brings together organizations across the computing and power industries, including AI platforms, infrastructure providers, data center operators, technology companies, power producers, utilities and regional transmission operators.
The founding members will be joined by launch partners from across the ecosystem. Together, AEMA will develop technical and operational approaches, collaborate with utilities on interconnection solutions and advocate for policies that recognize grid-ready electricity demand.
