This week, the programme explores the potential risks and possibilities of artificial intelligence in synthetic biology. The topic made headlines when researchers at Stanford University in the United States announced the creation of a new type of virus designed with artificial intelligence. Roland Pease discusses whether AI-designed viruses should concern us with microbiologist Dr Simon Clarke from the University of Reading and Joy Chan, professor of sociology at the University of Kent.
The programme also marks 50 years since NASA’s pioneering Viking space probe landed on Mars, a landmark achievement that transformed space science and our understanding of the Red Planet. Claire Cousins, a member of the European Space Agency team working on the ExoMars rover, explains how today’s ambitious Mars exploration missions build on the success of Viking.
