Formlabs Studio 1 Review: Detailed SLA 3D Printing, Low Noise and Easy Setup
Although I have printed only a few copies so far, my experience ordering and using the Formlabs Studio 1 has been positive. A full review is coming soon.
Clean, Quiet 17-Minute 3D Prints
I printed a transparent cover for the toolbox that comes with Studio 1. The print took about 17 minutes and came out clean and intact. The process was relatively quiet, with a resin smell noticeable mainly when I lifted the hood after printing was complete.
I’m looking forward to using the printer more and seeing what kinds of highly detailed creations it can produce.
SLA 3D Printing and Print Failure Rate
SLA printing allows for highly detailed structures. In Formlabs’ internal testing, the company says the print failure rate was about 2%. If that result holds up in real-world use, it would significantly outperform competing printers. However, that performance depends on using your own resin.
“You can use any material,” Lakatos says. “If you want to use toxic resins in the Amazon, you can. We don’t recommend it, but you can.”
Form Mobile App Makes Printing Easier
Formlabs also offers an app called Form Mobile, which lets you control printing and send designs to the Form Studio 1. Overall, the printer experience is surprisingly easy.
“It’s great when you want to play around with something,” Lakatos says. “For serious, beautiful things and projects that really need better material properties, beautiful resolution, etc., it’s hard to match that.”
Correction October 14, 2026, 12:00 PM: Clarified that a “clean and cure” unit is likely required and that Formlabs’ Alpha resin is UL GreenGuard certified when used with Formlabs VOC Extractor.
