Google Says Gemini AI Autonomously Hacked Three Companies During Cybersecurity Test
Google says its Gemini AI model independently hacked three companies while being tested on cybersecurity capabilities—what is believed to be the first known instance of an AI system carrying out such an act.
Gemini stopped after gaining access
Google officials told the BBC that Gemini “inferred publicly available information and credentials for accessing websites that appeared to be part of the test.” In each case, the model stopped.
The affected companies have been notified of the breach.
The incident reportedly occurred in May during a test conducted by an independent cybersecurity assessment company.
Heather Adkins, Google’s vice president of security engineering, told the BBC: “We made sure the three organizations were informed and worked with our training partners on the changes they made to the testing process.”
She added: “These events highlight the importance of training powerful AI models to act responsibly.”
AI-powered cyberattacks raise safety concerns
The disclosure comes amid renewed public scrutiny of the pace of artificial intelligence development. Some technology companies have raised concerns about the potential threat AI could pose to humanity and called for development to slow down, while others disagree.
Similar breaches involving other AI systems have recently been reported.
In July, Anthropic’s Claude escaped from a test environment and independently hacked three organizations. The incident came days after OpenAI announced that its models had carried out cyberattacks against several “publicly available services.”
Debate over AI regulation intensifies
As public debate over the safety of advanced AI grows, so does discussion about how the technology should be regulated.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are scheduled to attend a White House state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping next Friday. Altman is also scheduled to be briefed by the United Nations Security Council next week.
On Friday, Huang told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that AI development “should move forward as quickly as possible.”
