one of The most frustrating parts of using macOS is installing apps outside the Mac App Store. Most Mac software still relies on DMG files, requiring users to mount a disk image, locate the app, and drag it into the Applications folder.
To install a Mac app from a DMG file, you typically download the file, open it to mount a virtual disk, and then drag the application into your Applications folder. Once the installation is complete, you must eject the mounted disk image and delete the original DMG file. The process is functional but unnecessarily complicated. To be fair, this installation method was considered streamlined when it became common with Mac OS X in 2001. However, nearly 25 years later, macOS users have a more convenient option.
Developer Jeff Schuman created EasyDMG, a free Mac utility that automates the entire DMG installation process. The app features an adorable hamster mascot and the tagline “Created with malice.” Once EasyDMG is configured, you can double-click a DMG file and let the app handle the installation automatically.
First, download EasyDMG and install it using the traditional drag-and-drop method—the same process the app is designed to simplify. It is admittedly ironic, but you should only need to do it once. After installation, open EasyDMG’s settings and select the option to make it the default application for opening DMG files. The required button appears on the right side of the settings window.

After that, installing Mac software from a DMG file becomes much simpler. The next time you open a DMG, EasyDMG displays a progress window instead of leaving you to manage a mounted virtual disk. A progress bar tracks each step, including mounting the disk image, validating the application, installing the software, and cleaning up afterward.
