Microsoft continues to highlight the robust backward compatibility of its Xbox hardware across generations as a major advantage of its consoles. Recently, this initiative has extended beyond the traditional console environment, with several original Xbox titles officially becoming playable—and purchasable—on Windows PC for the first time.
The aptly named “Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC” program has officially launched today, featuring classics like BLiNX: Time Sweeper, Conquer: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: The Royal Road to Revenge, and Fusion Frenzy. Each title can be downloaded for just $10, but if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber or already own a digital copy from your console, you can play these games at no extra cost (note that inserting the original Xbox disc into your PC drive won’t grant access).
Experience these beloved Xbox titles on PC with enhanced graphics features, including Vsync support, anisotropic filtering, improved antialiasing, and up to 4x resolution scaling of the original SD signal (up to 2560 x 1920). However, it’s important to note that each game retains its original frame rate and aspect ratio, which usually results in 30 fps in a 4:3 format. Microsoft indicates that the games should run on a GTX 950 graphics card from 2011, but for optimal performance, a 2017 GTX 1070 Ti with 8GB of VRAM is recommended.
Digital Foundry’s initial testing suggests that the PC experience is quite comparable to playing on an Xbox Series X. However, testers did encounter some challenges, including weak anisotropic filtering, frame timing issues leading to “jerky camera movement,” and a few visual bugs in the early sections of the games.
