Fly-tipping in Milton Keynes has fallen by more than a quarter over the past five years, but the city council says there is still much more to do to tackle illegal waste dumping.
“Being a woman, I also feel an emotional connection to protecting greener spaces and building stronger communities.”
She says responsible waste carriers are often “tarred with the same brush” as unauthorised operators, despite paying for the necessary licences, insurance and waste disposal fees.
For McCluskey, the biggest reward is seeing the positive impact that reused items can have on people who receive them instead of them being thrown away.
“If you see a child of about five who has never had a scooter, and you manage to give them one through a donation collected in a tonne bag, it means that item has not ended up dumped by the roadside and has made someone really happy. I believe that is a really good thing to do,” she said.
