Meta’s AI Agent Muse Can Sext With Adults While OnlyFans Creators Face Social Media Restrictions
Generation AI Artificial intelligence has created a growing problem for Vanyal, an OnlyFans creator in New York City. Surreal deepfakes—AI-generated images and videos that imitate her—regularly appear online, and they are often difficult to remove.
Deepfakes and social media restrictions
Vanyal has also struggled to build an audience on major social media platforms such as Instagram without facing moderation problems. “There’s always some kind of report or complaint and I’m working with them on that,” she told WIRED.
Her Instagram account, which has more than 100,000 followers, is currently restricted and cannot be viewed without logging in.
That is why she is unhappy with Meta’s decision to allow its AI agent, Muse, to engage in explicit sexting with adult users.
“It’s unfair to use sexually active AI agents to extract money from people, but they’re not going to have real people, real adults, engage in any kind of sensuality or sexuality,” Vanyal said.
Other adult content creators have expressed a similar concern. They question why their accounts on Meta’s platforms appear to be restricted while Meta’s AI agents can talk explicitly with millions of adult users.
Meta says private AI conversations are different
“Private one-on-one conversations between adults and individual AI agents on an 18+-only platform are very different from marketing and promoting services on social media platforms,” Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton told WIRED.
Meta’s Muse is an always-on AI agent that has expanded beyond San Francisco’s early-adopter community. Muse apps work like message threads: users text a digital assistant, give it access to personal information such as their calendar and email, and allow it to proactively help with tasks, such as canceling a workout class that conflicts with a dinner reservation.
Meta’s broad distribution across platforms including Instagram and Facebook helped bring millions of new users to the agent. The app reached the top of the download charts during its first month.
What adult users can do with Meta’s Muse
Meta says that, in addition to organizing calendars and helping with everyday tasks, users of adult-only apps can have adult conversations with Muse. A Meta spokesperson previously told WIRED that the company does not “prevent adults from engaging in lawful activities.”
Muse can produce explicit text, but it does not generate explicit images or videos.
How adult creators use other social platforms
Meta takes a different approach to moderation on Instagram, while some other social media platforms in the United States permit sexually explicit content.
X remains one of the most popular platforms for many OnlyFans creators seeking new subscribers and communicating with fans. Many adult performers have also moved to Bluesky since Elon Musk took over the platform formerly known as Twitter. Users can share adult content on Bluesky as well.
