SpaceX’s stock price has dipped below its debut value just a month ago and has significantly decreased from its all-time high.
Shares of Elon Musk’s pioneering rocket, satellite, and artificial intelligence (AI) company fell to $132.62 (£98.24) on Wednesday, lower than the $135 value at its June initial public offering (IPO).
The IPO propelled Musk to become the world’s first billionaire, but the stock is currently down 41% from its previous intraday peak.
If the current share price remains steady or declines further, investors who purchased at IPO may face losses.
These turbulent weeks for tech stocks have particularly impacted SpaceX.
On Wednesday, SpaceX’s stock dropped over 2%, contrasting with a mere 0.2% decline in the Nasdaq index, where SpaceX is listed.
Since its public trading debut, SpaceX stock has shown considerable volatility.
Initial investor enthusiasm placed the company’s worth above that of giants like Amazon and Microsoft, but the stock price has since retreated.
Financial analysts recently shared with the BBC that investors initially viewed SpaceX as a unique opportunity to invest in an AI powerhouse.
Earlier this year, SpaceX acquired Musk’s AI startup xAI, which has been rebranded as SpaceXAI, marking its entrance into the AI-centric market.
XAI is known for the controversial chatbot Grok, and with this acquisition, SpaceX now leases data center capacity to various tech firms.
The core business of SpaceX revolves around the development and launch of rockets and the communication satellite network known as Starlink.
SpaceX’s stock fell by 8% after Starlink announced a price cut in Memphis, Tennessee, due to local concerns related to its extensive data center project.
“Nothing recent has reinforced the reasons why many investors initially bought into SpaceX,” stated Steve Sosnick, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers, to Reuters.
SpaceX is expected to unveil its first public earnings report in August.
Sosnick also remarked: “While being a few dollars below the offering price is not catastrophic, SpaceX remains highly visible and plays a pivotal role in overall investor sentiment.”
SpaceX did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment.
