On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, skywatchers across the United States and parts of Canada witnessed a rare daytime lunar occultation of Venus. This event occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of Venus from Earth’s perspective, temporarily hiding the bright planet from view.
The June event was the first of three lunar occultations of Venus in 2026, creating a spectacular sunrise sight for observers and photographers. If you missed it, two more opportunities remain: Venus will disappear behind the Moon on September 14, visible from parts of Asia, Africa, Europe, and western Russia, and again on November 7, when the event can be seen from southern South America.
